Step 1: Choose your salt type

Water softeners generally take either salt Pellets (yellow bag) or Crystals (blue bag). Ensuring you have the correct type is critical to the function and longevity of your water softener, so check carefully.

Not Sure Which Water Softener Salt to Get Delivered? Here's How to Choose.

When it’s time to have water softener salt delivered, the first step is knowing whether you need Pellets or Crystals. Making the right choice ensures your water softener works efficiently and helps you avoid costly issues down the line. Here’s how to tell what type of salt you need delivered:

1. Check Your Water Softener Manual

Most manufacturers specify the ideal salt type. If your manual recommends pellets, stick with them. If it mentions crystals, go with crystals. Still can’t find it? Keep reading—we’ve got more clues to help you decide what to get delivered.

2. Look at Your Brine Tank

  • If your tank is a single unit, especially if it’s newer, it’s probably designed for salt Pellets. Pellets dissolve slowly and are less likely to create buildup, making them ideal for high-efficiency systems.

  • If your tank is older, or a separate brine tank system, it may work better with Crystals, especially in areas with low water usage or high humidity. Crystals dissolve faster and are less prone to clumping in these conditions.

3. Consider Water Usage and Humidity

  • High water usage? Choose Pellets—they keep up with demand without clogging.

  • Low water usage or humid climate? Opt for Crystals to prevent bridging and improve flow.
